Abstract
Authors performed twenty-four aspiration biopsies of the lung utilizing simple spinal
tap needle or ordinary injection needle gauge 18 to 20 on nineteen of diagnostic problem
cases, that were seven cases of lung tumors, seven cases of pulmonary tuberculosis
including miliary tuberculosis, four cases of pneumonia and one case of postradiation
pneumonitis. Following are the experiences obtained in this series of procedures.
1. This successfully demonstrated malignant cells in six out of seven cases of
suspected lung cancer
2. In two cases of lung cancer with bilateral nodular dissemination and one of
postradiation pneumonitis following left radical mastectomy for cancer this procedire was
the most definitive mean of confirming the diagnosis.
3. In miliary tuberculosis and other unusual from of pulmonary tuberculosis and in
pneumonia cases this procedure tuberculosis and in pneumonia cases this procedure
added great deal of significance in differentiating and confirming the provisional
diagnosis in each case.
4. Complications were mild and negligible being consisted only of two cases of mild
pneumothorax one case of mild and transient hemoptysis and one case of moderate
pneumothorax. Latter was the case with tuberculosis and possibly with silicosis and two
separate aspirations were done at the same occasion.
5. It is concluded that the simple needle aspiration biopsy is a valuable, safer and
simpler method and this should be used prior to attempting special large needle biopsies
with Vim Silverman needle or others.
